EVERY street corner. But not ALL Coney Islands are created equally. American Coney Island has a history here in Detroit. It has ALWAYS been family owned by the Keros Family. Located in the heart of downtown on Lafayette it has always been a family staple for my family.
Currently Grace Keros is running the Detroit Icon.
Grace's grandfather, Gust Keros came to America in the early 1900's and in 1917 he opened the American Coney Island. He ran the restaurant until Grace's dad Charles J. Keros took over in the 1960's.
Grace has kept the family's secret ingredient chili that her grandfather invented. They use only Special Seasoned Natural casing hot dogs made especialy for them by the Dearborn Sausage Co. The Natural casing actually snaps with each bite! American Coney Island has been featured on numerous food network programs. That signature chili is still the same as it was when Grace's Grandfather made it in the early 1900's. American Coney Island is Detroit's oldest family owned and operated restaurant.
